Vikings have taken over the Carnegie Science Center! We partnered with the CSC to create a video as part of the ad campaign for their new Vikings exhibit. We wrote, filmed, directed, and edited this fun TV spot. This video was used in part of a larger campaign that combined print, radio, and TV advertising.

Another fun shoot in the books! To celebrate the 25th of Diablo, Blizzard launched a Hell’s Ink Tattoo Tour:

“To honor the Diablo community and celebrate Diablo’s 25th anniversary this year, Diablo Hell’s Ink was launched, which kicked off with a worldwide tattoo shop takeover tour that gave fans free, premium Diablo tattoos.

Two fans in each city were selected to receive a custom Diablo tattoo from hero artists that represents their winning story. Other artists at each tattoo shop collaborated on unique Diablo flash tattoo sheets to give out to fans on a first come, first served basis.” (


The second stop of the tour was right here in Pittsburgh. Diablo fans lined up outside of Wyld Chyld Tattoo to get original Diablo tattoos. Parish Digital partnered with Blizzard and Levitate Media as the video crew to capture the event.

We are very excited to have updated our gear! We recently purchased two Sony FX6s. These cameras boast a 4K Full-Frame 10.2MP CMOS Exmor R Sensor, 15+ Stops of Dynamic Range in S-Log 3 EI, and record in 4K60p, UHD 4K120, and 1080p240. The FX6 was designed to be a workhorse: they’re durable, compact, have high ease-of-use, and produce incredible video. Additionally, Sony’s autofocus system and color science are some of the best in the industry.


We upgraded our gear to offer the best video production services possible. We realized that our previous cameras, the Canon C300 Mark II, had become slightly outdated. When they started giving us technical issues (continuously) we knew it was time to upgrade. With our new cameras we’ll be able to offer more efficient productions and higher quality deliverables.

How to Make the Most of Your Video Production

We recently had a great opportunity to partner with Trying Together: an organization that supports high-quality care and education for young children by providing advocacy, community resources, and professional growth opportunities for the needs and rights of children, their families, and the individuals who interact with them.

This project took us to seven different child care facilities in the Pittsburgh area. We created a customized video for each location that highlights the strengths of each facility. The final videos will be posted on the Allegheny Child Care finder tool.

It was fun to learn about each of these fantastic organizations and learn how they promote education in young children. We hope that these videos will help connect families to the best child care resources possible for their children.

Highlighting Child Care in Pittsburgh

Our team has had the opportunity to create many animations for projects over the years. We usually use animation to supplement a video, but often we are creating entirely animated projects. At our company, we use animation as a term that defines any motion graphic, animated text, and animated photo. We create a lot of animated company logos, text callouts, animated call to actions, and even character animations. We have created many training videos that require a lot of text callouts and bulleted lists. Some would say this is less than exciting work– which, for the record, sometimes is– but I do find a lot of enjoyment in this. I view creating animated lists as a creative challenge.

When the job is to make a sports car look fun and exciting, not much creativity goes into that. Anyone can make a sports car look exciting as sports cars are an inherently exciting thing. When the job is to make paint drying look exciting, that requires a significant amount of extra thought and creativity. Paint drying is factually boring. It is a creative challenge to bring excitement and engagement to paint drying.


Bulleted lists are boring. It is a fun and creative challenge to make them engaging while also figuring out the best way to make them readable and to display the correct information. When I have to make a series of 20 training videos, I need to find enjoyment in the little things.

The COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® program is PPG’s signature initiative for community engagement efforts, with the aim to protect and beautify the neighborhoods where PPG operates around the world.


We have been partnering with the COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® program for years now, creating videos for their Pittsburgh based projects. This year they wanted to change the style of their videos but needed some creative help.

In the end, we created a snappy video that was promoted on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. This new style resulted in an increase in impressions and re-energized the excitement around the COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® program.

Beautifying Neighborhoods Around the World

Our team has traveled across the US for some unique projects. My favorite part of this job is how regularly I get to meet new people in new places. So many of us live within our local bubbles, never exploring some of the wonderful places and culture that exist across our country. I am certainly grateful for these travel opportunities. When on the road, some of our favorite projects are the ones where we can launch our drone. The drone allows us to explore a new location from above. This new perspective really helps us to take in the beauty of wherever we’re filming. Our licensed drone pilot, Mike DiGuglielmo, put together this demo video that includes some of his favorite drone shots. We are excited to share this footage and we are looking forward to the new places we’ll explore in the future.

ASRA Pain Medicine partnered with us on a unique project that was a three part series following Dr. Sandra L. Kopp and Judith Robins, MA as they explored the history of pain medicine through historical artifacts found at the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology. Being experts in their fields, Kopp and Robins entertain and educate as they go over one-of-a-kind anesthesiology artifacts.

This project was also unique for us as we only were hired to do the editing. Another local team handled production and passed the footage along to us. Working collaboratively with a creative agency, we were able to bring this series to life.

A New Year in Video Production

A month or two ago, we were hired as the video crew by WIRED to film at a Pittsburgh start up that is developing a new way to get around. Shift Robotics successfully funded "The World's Fastest Shoes" through their Kickstarter campaign in late 2022. Their goal is to bring to market a shoe that utilizes AI to help you walk faster. Moonwalkers are a fun, new way to get around the city. 

Even though the temperature ﻿was around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, we had a blast working with the WIRED and Shift Robotics teams. We delivered the footage to WIRED's editing team and they put together the awesome video seen above.

Shoes that make you walk 250% Faster: A Pittsburgh Startup 

At Parish Digital, we recently acquired our new baby - the Red Komodo. It’s a powerful yet petite Cinema Camera that shoots 6k RAW video, and the images it produces can be so incredible that it sometimes surprises even us. But despite its proficiency in capturing stunning images, we often find ourselves leaving it behind in favor of “lesser” cameras for many of our shoots, and it may seem a bit counterintuitive, but this decision to leave our most powerful, highest quality piece of equipment at the studio can actually yield a better finished product.

Parish Digital deals with a broad range of clients and projects that call for a variety of tactics, and equipment to accomplish successfully. If money, time, and crew size were no object, our new Red camera might be the best fit for most of our projects, but unfortunately we don’t all live in that dream world, so camera selection continues to be a consideration on every project we take on. For pre-planned shoots in controllable environments, choosing the Komodo is a no-brainer, but when we need to be a bit more “run-n-gun”, our 1Dx mark ii DSLR cameras with their impressive autofocus and impeccable straight-out-of-camera image quality may be a better choice. If we have a tight turnaround on an interview shoot, our C300 mark ii with its professional audio inputs delivers not only high quality images, but great audio without the need to sync in post, allowing for expedited delivery to the client. There’s also the consideration of file sizes and post production processing time. Both of the tools I mentioned above produce relatively small files that can be quickly finished and delivered, as opposed to the Komodo, who’s files average about 6.5GB per minute, all of which need to be processed and color graded before delivery.

So as you can see, there are many considerations to address with equipment selection for any given project, and while we at Parish Digital may not always bring our “best” camera onto your project, we will certainly bring the camera that will produce the best result for the job, and to the end viewer of all our videos, that’s the most important thing.

Selecting the Right Camera for the Job

For those of you who don't know, have you ever watched a cartoon? Well, that's an animation right there! Anything that moves across a screen and isn't grounded in reality (live action film) is animation. And I mean 

Just like learning how to play piano or draw, animation is a skill that must be practiced like any artform. And with being an artform, there are fundamentals that must be learned to really make something come alive. I won’t get into all of them here but the most basic of fundamentals is the “squash and stretch”. Squash and Stretch is the main principle of animation where you take the shape of the object you are animating and applying contrast to that shape. With this technique you can make so many things come to life and help people understand what the material the shape is made from.

There are (as of right now) three main types of animation; 2D or Traditional animation, stop motion animation, and 3D animation.

Traditional animation is what the average joe thinks of when they think of animation. This animation is hand-drawn frame by frame. A frame is a single image from a sequence of pictures that make up a video. Every time you pause a video on YouTube or when you are watching Netflix, you are looking at a frame of that video or movie. So, if you are watching an animation, its normally in 24 frames per second. That means 24 drawings per second! Animation wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for hand-drawn or stop motion. This is the grandfather of animation itself, along with stop motion.

Stop Motion animation is very close to traditional animation in the fact that everything is done by hand but in this sense, they use puppets instead of drawings. They move the puppet one frame at a time to create the sense of movement just like you can get through hand-drawn animation. You can see this in a lot of older movies and was normally used with film! One of the most famous movies that has this is Jason and the Argonauts (1963 film) and the one who animated it was Ray Harryhausen, who is famous for his stop-motion puppets.

Over the years, as technology grew, more and more animators were being drawn to 3D animation which is most of the animation that you see today. Traditional and Stop motion animations were getting expensive to produce and studios saw the appeal in working with 3D animation and graphics. 3D animation uses puppets just like stop motion only with 3D, everything is done with the computer. The character and prop modeling and the animation are all done with the computer and with that comes the no longer need of buying materials such as paper, pencils, and paints. Studios could now cut on costs.

You would think that traditional animation is out of date, but it's being revitalized as 2D Digital animation! Which is one of my favorite types of animation! 2D animation has so many ways that it can be used. You can use frame by frame animation, use a puppet-rig, and/or much more. With 2D animation you can get the same appeal you can get from traditional animation with this animation style. It is also easier to handle because you don’t have to worry about losing a drawing here or there. It’s all there in the computer unless you don’t save. Here at Parish Digital, we use 2D animation to create motion graphics for videos. Motion graphics including title cards, effects, transitions, and so much more! With motion graphics, we can make companies brands come to life through our videos.

Creating an animation isn’t an easy feat. Normally to create a fully animated feature film, you need many different people working on it together. You can be a producer or director for an animated film, an animator or an illustrator for concept art, musician for the score of the film or a voice actor to give life to the characters!
